From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéh₁(y)-e-ti, from *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suckle, nurse”). Cognate with Latin fellō, Old Church Slavonic доити (doiti), Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌳𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (daddjan, “suckle”), Ancient Greek θηλή (thēlḗ), Old Armenian դիեմ (diem).
