Etymology
From नव (náva, “new”) + *नीत (nīta), the second component from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nayH- (“to churn butter”). Cognate with Baluchi نیمغ (nēmağ, “butter”), Khotanese [script needed] (ñye, “buttermilk”). Also related to Persian پنیر (panir, “cheese”).
