Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hnā́bʰiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnā́bʰiš, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃nóbʰ-is, from *h₃nebʰ- (“navel”). Cognate with Old Prussian nabis, Ancient Greek ὀμφαλός (omphalós), Latin umbilicus, Old English nafela (whence English navel).
