From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀮 (pattala, “thin”), from Sanskrit पत्त्रल (pattralá, “leafy”). Cognate with Gujarati પાતળું (pātaḷũ), Marathi पातळ (pātaḷ), Oriya ପାତଳ (patôḷô), Bengali পাতলা (patla), Assamese পাতল (patol).
