From Sanskrit पीडयति (pīḍayati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pižd-, from Proto-Indo-European *pisd- (to squeeze). Cognate with Marathi पिळणे (piḷṇe, to twist, squeeze). Compare also Tamil பிழி (piḻi) and Kannada ಹಿಂಡು (hiṇḍu), both inherited from an early Sanskrit borrowing.
