From Proto-Indo-Aryan *praśnás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *praĉnás, from Proto-Indo-European *pleḱ-nó-s or *ploḱ-nó-s, from *pleḱ- (“to fold, weave”). Cognate with Latin plecto, Ancient Greek πλοκή (plokḗ).
