From Proto-Indo-Aryan *prináHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *prináHti, from Proto-Indo-European *pri-néH-ti (nasal infix athematic present), from *preyH- (“to like; love”). Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬁𐬟𐬭𐬍𐬥𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (āfrīnaiti), Old English frēoġan (“to love”), English free and friend.
