From Proto-Indo-Aryan *(s)pliHźʰā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *spliHĵʰā́, from Proto-Indo-European *sploiǵh₂ḗn (“spleen”). Cognate with Ancient Greek σπλήν (splḗn) (whence English spleen), Latin lien, Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬥 (spərəzan), Old Armenian փայծաղն (pʿaycałn), Russian селезёнка (selezjónka), Lithuanian blužnis, Persian اسپرز (esporz).
