From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰr̥Hȷ́ás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰr̥Hĵás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerHǵós (“birch”). Cognate with Lithuanian beržas, Proto-Slavic *berza (“birch”), Latin fraxinus, Old English birċe, bierċe (whence English birch).
