From Old Marathi 𑘥𑘹𑘘𑘱 (bheṭi), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁆- (*bheṭṭ-, “to meet”) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀦 n (bhiṭṭana), 𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀸 f (bhiṭṭā, “present”)). Cognate with Gujarati ભેટ (bheṭ), Hindi भेंट (bheṇṭ), Oriya ଭେଟି (bheṭi). Related to भेटणे (bheṭṇe).
