Etymology

Borrowed from Sanskrit मधु (mádhu) with the deletion of the final vowel[1], from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mádʰu, from Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (honey, wine). Compare Old Marathi 𑘦𑘟𑘳 (madu), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀳𑀼 (mahu), Gujarati મધ (madh).
