From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráHyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ráHyati, from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂- (“to bark”). Cognate with Old East Slavic лаꙗти (lajati), Latin lātrō, Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌰𐌽 (laian), Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬧𐬙 (raiiaṇt, “shouting”).
