From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwā́ti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wḗh₁ti. Cognate with Latin ventus (wind), Ancient Greek ἄημι (áēmi, I blow), Old Church Slavonic вѣтръ (větrŭ, wind), Latvian vētra (storm), Old English wind.
