श्मश्रु
Sanskrit
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *smoḱru- (“beard”). Cognate with Albanian mjekër (“beard”), Old Armenian մօրուք (mōrukʿ, “beard”), Lithuanian smãkras (“chin”), Hittite 𒍝𒈠𒀭𒆳 (za-ma-an-kur /tsmá(n)gur/, “beard”), Irish smech (“chin”). The assimilation of Sanskrit *s to *ś (thus giving श्मश्रु (śmaśru) instead of स्मश्रु (smaśru)) is regular in the presence of another *ś as is also observed in शश (śaśa, “hare”) and श्वशुर (śvaśura, “father-in-law”).
