From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śrútiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĉrútiš, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlú-ti-s, from *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Cognate with Old English hlūd (whence English loud).
