From Proto-Tai *ɣoːᴬ (“neck”), from Middle Chinese 喉 (MC ɦəu, “larynx; throat”). Cognate with Lao ຄໍ (khǭ), Shan ၶေႃး (khóa), Ahom 𑜁𑜦𑜡 (khoo) or 𑜁𑜞𑜦𑜡 (khroo), Zhuang hoz, Saek กฺ๊อ.
