รัตน (rát-dtà-ná-, “gem; jewel”) + ตรัย (dtrai, “three”); perhaps via Old Khmer ratnatrai, ratanatraiya, ratnatatrai, ratnataitra, rattatrai. Compare Modern Khmer រត្នត្រ័យ (rɔɔtnɔɔtrɨy), រត្នត្រៃ (rɔɔtnɔɔtrɨy); Lao ລັດຕະນະໄຕ (lat ta na tai).
