From ศาล (sǎan, “court”) + ยุติธรรม (yút-dtì-tam, “justice”); calque of English court of justice; believed to be shortened from the archaic term ศาลในสนามสถิตยุติธรรม (sǎan-nai-sà-nǎam-sà-tìt-yút-dtì-tam) or ศาลสถิตยุติธรรม (sǎan-sà-tìt-yút-dtì-tam).
