From Proto-Tai *ʰlaːnᴬ (“nephew; niece; grandchild”). Cognate with Lao ຫຼານ (lān), Tai Dam ꪨꪱꪙ, Shan လၢၼ် (lǎan), Ahom 𑜎𑜃𑜫 (lan), Zhuang lan, Saek หล่าน. Compare Sui haanl (“grandson”).
