From Old Chinese 鹹 (OC *ɡrɯːm, “salty”) or 鹽 (OC *ɡ·lam, *ɡ·lams, “salt, salty”). Cognate with Lao ເຄັມ (khem), Shan ၸဵမ်း (tsém), Saek แค๊ม.
