From Proto-Tai *ɓlɯənᴬ (“moon; month”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯᩮᩬᩥᩁ, Lao ເດືອນ (dư̄an), Lü ᦵᦡᦲᧃ (ḋoen), Shan လိူၼ် (lǒen), Ahom 𑜓𑜢𑜤𑜃𑜫 (duen) or 𑜃𑜢𑜤𑜃𑜫 (nuen), Zhuang ndwen or mbwen, Saek เบรี๋ยน. Compare also Proto-Austronesian *bulaN (whence Malay bulan).
