From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mlɛːŋᴬ (insect), from Proto-Tai *m.leːŋᴬ (insect), from Middle Chinese 螟蛉 (MC meŋ leŋ, “caterpillar”).[1] Cognate with Thai แมง (mɛɛng, arachnid), Tai Nüa ᥛᥦᥒᥰ (maeng2), Zhuang nengz.
