From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mlɛːŋᴬ (“insect”), from Proto-Tai *m.leːŋᴬ (“insect”), from Middle Chinese 螟蛉 (MC meŋ leŋ, “caterpillar”).[1] Cognate with Thai แมง (mɛɛng, “arachnid”), Tai Nüa ᥛᥦᥒᥰ (maeng2), Zhuang nengz.
