From Proto-Tai *ʔeːkᴰ (“yoke”), from Old Chinese 軛 (OC *qreːɡ, “yoke”). Cognate with Lao ແອກ (’ǣk), Tai Dam ꪵꪮꪀ, Shan ဢႅၵ်ႇ (’àek), Ahom 𑜒𑜢𑜀𑜫 (’ik).
