From Sanskrit शोक (śoka, “sorrow; grief; distress; affliction; etc”), possibly via Angkorian Old Khmer sok (“sorrow; affliction”) or Middle Khmer soka (“grief, affliction; sorrow, mourning; lamentation, regret”); compare Modern Khmer សោក (saok), Pali soka (“grief; sorrow; mourning”). Cognate with Lao ໂສກ (sōk), ໂສກາ (sō kā).
