From Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (“enclosure”)[1]. Cognate with Thai เวียง (wiiang), Northern Thai ᩅ᩠ᨿᨦ (wiang). Khmer វៀង (viəng, “city, metropolis, capital”) is a back-loan from Tai.
