From Proto-Tai *prawᴬ (“to burn (tr.)”). Compare Middle Chinese 炮 (MC bˠau, “to roast; to burn”). Cognate with Thai เผา (pǎo), Lü ᦕᧁ (ṗhaw), Tai Dam ꪹꪠꪱ, Shan ၽဝ် (phǎw), Ahom 𑜇𑜧 (phaw).
