Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-ka-(n/m/ŋ) (“bitter”). Cognate with Tibetan ཁ་བ (kha ba), Sichuan Yi ꈌ (ke), Lisu ꓘꓪꓽ (kʰwà), S'gaw Karen ခၣ် (khà), and Chinese 苦 (kǔ), all ‘bitter’.
