Etymology
Possibly an Indo-Aryan loanword. Compare Thai สำเภา (sǎm-pao), Lao ສຳເພົາ (sam phao) or ສະເພົາ (sa phao), Khmer សំពៅ (sɑmpɨw), Sanskrit पोत (pota, “ship”) and सपोत (sapota, “having a ship”).
