From Old Georgian ასი (asi), from Proto-Kartvelian *as₁-. Cognate with Mingrelian ოში (oši), Laz ოში (oši) and Svan აშირ (ašir).

Etymology
According to Fähnrich and Klimov (1985), from Proto-Kartvelian *as₁-. However, Klimov reconstructs Common-Kartvelian *as₁ir- (“hundred”) in his later works and adds that it might be borrowed from a Semitic source.
