From Old Georgian [Term?], from earlier *აბაზხ-ი (*abazx-i) borrowed from Mingrelian *აუ̂აზხ-ი (*aûazx-i), which most probably goes back to a Hellenic source, rather than Adyghe абазэхэ (ābāzăxă).
