Etymology

Starostin reconstructs Proto-Georgian-Zan *ḳalmax- (fish). Cognate with Laz კალმახა (ḳalmaxa) and Svan კალმახ (ḳalmax), კალმა̈ხ (ḳalmäx), კალმახუ̂ (ḳalmaxû).

On the other hand, Marr derives from Armenian կարմրախայտ (karmraxayt).
