Etymology

Kipšidze connects with Georgian მანგალი (mangali), and Ačaṙean puts the word under the list of borrowings from Old Armenian մանգաղ (mangał).

On the other hand, Klimov / Xalilov derive from Greek μαγγάνα (mangána) glossing it “machine”, probably meaning Greek μάγγανο (mángano), Ancient Greek μάγγανον (mánganon, “the name of various machines”).
