სუანი
Old Georgian
Etymology
The ethnonym is often connected with the name of a tribe Sanni, mentioned by various ancient Greek authors. However, according to Vakhushti Batonishvili, the term is derived from სავანე (savane, “shelter, residency”), but this is usually considered to be a folk etymology.
Due to the cognates present in other Kartvelian languages, Proto-Kartvelian *s₁wan- (“Svan”) is reconstructible.
