From Proto-Kartvelian *q̇al- (“penis”). Cognate with Mingrelian ჸოლე (ʾole), Laz ყოლე (q̇ole), კოლე (ḳole) and Svan ყლაუ̂ (q̇laû, “boy”). Armenian կլիր (klir) may be a Kartvelian borrowing.
