ἄμβροτος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *ə́mrətos, from Proto-Indo-European *n̥mr̥tós. Equivalent to ἀ- (a-, not) + βροτός (brotós, mortal). The β (b) developed by epenthesis, as the earlier form was *amrtos, with a nasal-liquid cluster, which is not allowed in Greek phonotactics. Cognate with Sanskrit अमृत (amṛ́ta) and Avestan 𐬀𐬨𐬆𐬱𐬀 (aməša).
