Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin, in view of the rare cluster "-σβ-" and the variant σποδός (spodós, ashes). According to Beekes, the word is also connected with ψόλος (psólos, soot, smoke) and σπολεύς (spoleús, loaf of bread).
