ἄσβολος
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ἀσβόλη (asbólē)
Etymology
Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin, in view of the rare cluster "-σβ-" and the variant σποδός (spodós, “ashes”). According to Beekes, the word is also connected with ψόλος (psólos, “soot, smoke”) and σπολεύς (spoleús, “loaf of bread”).
