Etymology

Two possibilities:

locative case of Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewsḗr, whence ᾱ̓ήρ (āḗr, “mist, air”) and cognate with ἠώς (ēṓs, “dawn”)
from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eyeri (“early”)

Compare ἠέριος (ēérios, “with the early morning”).
