Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *seyk- (to reach (for)). The synonyms ἱκάνω (hikánō) and ἱκνέομαι (hiknéomai) are from the same root, with a nasal suffix. Possibly cognate with ἥκω (hḗkō, to have arrived, be present).
