Ὄλυμπος

Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- Οὔλυμπος (Oúlumpos)
Etymology
According to Beekes, Pre-Greek "without a doubt". Suspecting originally an appellative word for "mountain", he tentatively identified suffix -ump-.
Probably cognate with Mycenaean Greek [script needed] (u-ru-pi-ja-jo, “description of men, possibly ethnical”), which may indicate original /u/ in the anlaut.
