From Demotic ꜥf (“fly”), from Egyptian ꜥfj (“fly, bee”), from earlier ꜥff (“fly”), from Proto-Afro-Asiatic *ðuṗṗ. Ultimately cognate with Hebrew זבוב, Akkadian 𒉏 (zumbu, zubbu, dubbum).
