Etymology
From the 13th-century Buddhist text Wudeng Huiyuan (《五燈會元》, Compendium of Five Lamps). Literally “oral stele”, as steles are a medium for commemorative text relating to the deceased person. Compare 有口皆碑 (yǒukǒujiēbēi).
