Etymology
Two theories:
- A sound change from the 唐音 (とうおん, “tōon”) reading of "スワンパン" (swanpan), or
- From a Ryūkyūan language, written as スルバン (suruban), originally スヌパン (sunupan).
Both have the same origin: the abacus was imported to Japan from China during the Muromachi period. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) Compare from Mandarin, above.
