Etymology
Corrupted from 恥; first used in Eastern Han dynasty. Listed as an unorthodox form (俗字) in the Kangxi Dictionary. Superficially a phono-semantic compound (形聲) : semantic 耳 + phonetic 止 (OC *kjɯʔ).
Officially adopted as simplified from 恥 in mainland China.
