Etymology
Origin unclear. Possibly borrowed from Middle Chinese 馬術 (mˠaX ʑiuɪt̚, literally “horse + technique”); compare Min Nan reading bé-su̍t.
Alternatively, a Japanese coinage as a compound of Chinese-derived elements 馬 (ba, “horse”) + 術 (jutsu, “technique”).
