Etymology
Borrowed from Japanese 国民学校 (kokumingakkō), which substituted 소학교 (小學校, sohakgyo) between 1941-1947. Replaced by 초등학교 (chodeunghakgyo) in 1996 in order to liquidate remnants of colonial and militaristic influence by Japanese empire.
