First attested in the "Shingan Guhwangchalyo" 新刊救荒撮要 (신간구황촬요), 1660, as ᄆᆡ오 (mᆡo), combination of ᄆᆡᆸ () + suffix - (o) After the mid-15th century, () changed to (o), (u) in front of a vowel other than (i). See also 맵다 (maepda) and ().
