Etymology
First attested in the Gugeopganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean ᄲᅡᆷ (spam). Also attested in the Bak Tongsa eonhae (朴通事諺解 / 박통사언해), 1677 as ᄲᅣᆷ (spyam), direct origin of the standard form. Compare dialectal forms 뱜 (byam, Central/Gangwon), 빰 (ppam, Hengyeong/Jeolla/Gyeongnam), 뺌 (ppaem, Gyeongbuk/Chungbuk), etc. and Jeju 삐얌 (ppiyam).[1]
