Possibly from Hittite πΈππΏ (AΕ‘Ε‘uwa, βnorthwest Anatoliaβ) of uncertain origin, but perhaps from either:
- Akkadian ππ (βto go out, to riseβ), a reference to the rising sun, hence βland of the sunrise.β
- a proposed Aegean language family word "asis", meaning "muddy" or "silty", as reference to the silty eastern shores of the Aegean sea.
