From Proto-Turkic *ălp (“difficult, hard, brave; warrior”). Cognate to Khakas алып (alıp, “hero”), Kazakh алып (alıp, “giant”), Tatar алып (alıp, “giant”), Turkish alp (“hero”), Yakut алып (alıp, “craftiness, deception, magic”).
