1. Alternative form of -ание (-anije): -tion, -ence, -ance, -ity, etc. (suffix used to form abstract nouns from verbs; added especially to nouns ending in -ать (-atʹ))

   ‎купа́ть (kupátʹ, “to bathe”) + ‎-а́нье (-ánʹje) → ‎купа́нье (kupánʹje, “bathing”)

   ‎призна́ть (priznátʹ, “to recognize, to acknowledge, to declare”) + ‎-а́нье (-ánʹje) → ‎призна́нье (priznánʹje, “recognition, acknowledgment, declaration (obsolete or poetic)”)

   ‎жа́ловать (žálovatʹ, “to reward, to favor”) + ‎-анье (-anʹje) → ‎жа́лованье (žálovanʹje, “wages, salary, stipend”)

   ‎ды́хать (dýxatʹ, “to breathe”) + ‎-а́нье (-ánʹje) → ‎дыха́нье (dyxánʹje, “breath, breathing”)

• This suffix is an alternative form of -ание (-anije). Originally, the two suffixes were equivalent, and both variants existed for most words, but nowadays only certain verbs can form nouns in -анье (-anʹje), and these nouns often have an obsolete, poetic or sometimes colloquial flavor.
• The properties of this suffix are as for -ание (-anije); for example, the stress is usually not drawn onto the suffix, unlike for -е́нье (-énʹje) (but note ды́хать (dýxatʹ, “to breathe”) → дыха́нье (dyxánʹje, “breath, breathing”)).
